A BIRTHDAY GIFT

Bookmark and Share

This short story will tell you a great deal about Global Learning PARTNERS. The partners and staff are having their summer meeting in Rhode Island at Valerie Uccellani’s parents’home in early June. I received a sweet invitation to join them –not for the meeting –but for the good fellowship, good food, ocean air and rocking chair porch so they can celebrate my June birthday with me. Enclosed in the invitation was a round trip air ticket and a reservation for nights at a nearby Ocean Inn.

Friends who know me are not surprised that the invitation brought me to tears –of joy,of gratitude of deep affection for these PARTNERS.

AS a student at Walden University,I am in a course where we are doing blogging. As one of my projects,I chose to find out more about Global Learning PARTNERS. I love this site. As a nurse educator,I am passionate about nursing and teaching nursing. I see teaching / learning as a partnership between the learner and facilitator (teacher). As an educator / facilitator,I can engage students in an atmosphere rich in respect, trust, and passion for lifelong learning to encourage those “authentic learning experiences”.

  • I agree wholeheartedly about authenticity and paying attention to the whole person through listening, genuine interest, and what brings joy.

And as Jane shared with us during this working retreat in Rhode Island,“the measure [of a great learning experience] is joy.”

  • Jane,

It was JOY to have you with us in Rhode Island. Even when the joy of planning the future kept us from spending more time together,I still deeply appreciated your presence. And I still marvel that your presence only becomes more authentic and more genuine with years.

The longer I think about it,that’s the measure of teaching, isn’t it:genuine, authentic listening, paying attention to the whole person, showing genuine interest in what motivates, what concerns, what brings joy to a learner. What about you? what do you see is the measure of teaching (/ facilitating / training / etc.)?
